“A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at him or her…” – David Brinkley

When you try to create your online business you will be bombarded with emails offering you ‘Bricks’ that may or may not help to build your system. Some will be free and some paid for.

For the plan I’m using you will need is a domain, webhosting and an autoresponder and these will all cost. There are ways to raise this money first (hire yourself out eg if you are good at graphics, or installing scripts) but you need need some finance to build a business.
I believe you also need coaching, mentoring or to at least be a member of some useful forums as I mentioned in my last post.
You will also to need your own product and some good contacts. You can use other peoples products initially but it won’t work as well or as fast.

The hardest part is to only collect the parts that your really need and throw away the rest.

You must have a solid plan just like when you are building a house, so that you know exactly what you need and what to do. Otherwise you will end up with the leaning tower of pisa with crumbling foundations.

You must focus on this plan and not start building other sites before you have one working.

It takes time – Rome wasn’t build in a day, but if you keep pushing away at one plan you will get there.
But be prepared – it may well take a couple of years. Most people aren’t going to tell you that but realistically it does take time to gather the knowledge you need and to train yourself to put it to good use.

If you are just starting out this probably isnt what you want to hear, but everyone finds this out in the end anyway so you are better off knowing now.

Focus – don’t keep checking your email, autoresponder, or paypal accounts.
I’ve been doing that today 🙁 it just shows that finding out what to do is much easier than actually doing it. It’s just that I keep getting ‘Congratulations , You Just made a sale’ emails and until this week this didn’t happen.

You have to ignore all the latest products on how to make $1000 per day without doing any work and stick to one thing. If you don’t you will never even make $1 per day.

Following a big boost in my IM business early this week I spent Thursday working on my IM business and left the staff to run our Printing & Stationery and Mail Order businesses. It was sunny so I had a break in the garden. It’s not quite warm enough in our summerhouse, but later in the year I may sit in there with my laptop and work, or maybe even go away somewhere for a week in the summer.
Can you imagine what it would be like to get this kind of freedom?

That’s the target I’m working towards, but for now it focus, focus, focus…

Challenge from an Alex Jeffrey’s Student

This post is part of Alex Jeffreys Coaching Course the idea was started by Gary Simpson (see his post below – warning watch out for his scary photo! )

25 things about myself – very hard to think of so I’m going to copy other peoples ideas.

1) This is a list of all the jobs I have had since I left school:
One year as a temporary assistant chemist.

Sorry it’s not very interesting but that’s it – I started a business during that year and I’ve been self employed ever since.

2) I studied at Durham University for a Physics and Maths Joint Honours Degree

3) I left No.2 after 4 months to go become full time in my mail order business.

4) I was a free lance machine code programmer and some of my games are listed online -I’ve no idea why people spend their time creating sites lie these:

5) I own a printing company

6) I won a business award run by the Daily Express in 1981 (and had my photo on the front page) and would have been on national TV, but the Falklands War started the same time.

7) The town I live in (Whitehaven) was the last place in the UK to be invaded (by the US Navy)

8 ) I have a sister who lives in New Zealand

9) My Mother is also an eBay seller (She sells plants)

10) I learnt to sail when I was 12

11) I was equal top in my schools for A’ Level results and won a cash prize

12) My school had no computers until I ran a campaign and raised funds to get one.

13) When I was young I used to do magic tricks

14) I used to do A’ Level maths exams as a hobby (when I was in the 6th form)
You should try it, it’s great fun!

15) My first business was designing, building, and selling electronic add-ons for computers such as the ZX81

16) My First computer was an Ohio Superboard II
It had no case, only 2k of memory, used a TV as a monitor and a cassette player for storing data.

17) I only passed my driving test 2 years ago

18) I take on all sorts of DIY jobs, my biggest was putting a new roof on our garage.

19) My drawing of our cat was published in the Beano when I was about 8 or 9 and I won 50 pence!

20) I was a member of young enterprise for 2 years.

25) My maths aren’t as good as they used to be!

As there aren’t many students left to tag, and I don’t know who has been and who hasn’t can I change the rules?

I’d like to tag Gary so he has to think of another 25 things (well he did start this)
And take it outside the student group and spread it across the web so I’ve tagged another 5 people from my blog commentators list:

Randy Smith

Alex Jeffreys Coaching Competition

This will be a very quick post as I am going away for the weekend.  I’ve just created this quick video which is my entry to On of Alex Jeffreys Coaching Competitions.  We have to create a video which mentions our name so hopefully I remembered to say mine is Keith Purkiss , website (Mine is Coaching With
and also we had to mention Alex Jeffreys and his website .

This is only my second video and you will spot a few mistakes and see that I had to read some of it from notes, but come back again soon and see how much I improve!

Speak to you all soon, and if you havent made a video yet make sure you do soon!

I’ve also recorded an interview with copy writing expert Randy Smith and uploaded part 1 to Youtube. Part 2 with be included in my eBay coaching course.

As most people reading this will know I am on Alex Jeffreys coaching course and he had offered a prize of $1000 for the best video.   This is my trial run, I will have to make a lot more before I have one I’d want to enter with.  I’m 99.9999999999999% sure I won’t win it but didn’t somebody say it’s the taking part that counts?

Also I was at Lee McIntyre’s workshop in Manchester on Friday and Saturday and he insisted we all stretch ourselves and move into areas that are uncomfortable for us.

So last night I made my first audio (which is just a test one) with the help of David Chamberlain from the coaching course, and also my first homemade video (actually I made about 10 and believe it or not this is the best one – I’ve destroyed the rest as they were REALLY bad)

My Audio Test
Play the audio here

I searched Google for free skype recording software and used this one:

My Welcome Video

For the video I used a camcorder that outputs MPEG files and YouTube wouldnt upload it.

I used a tool found by Marcus Passey

and converted to MP4. The MP4 file didnt work either, so I used the software again to convert to AVI and finally got it to work.

Now I just have to create one with some useful content.
