Building A Wall From The Bricks People Throw At You…
“A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at him or her…” – David Brinkley
When you try to create your online business you will be bombarded with emails offering you ‘Bricks’ that may or may not help to build your system. Some will be free and some paid for.
For the plan I’m using you will need is a domain, webhosting and an autoresponder and these will all cost. There are ways to raise this money first (hire yourself out eg if you are good at graphics, or installing scripts) but you need need some finance to build a business.
I believe you also need coaching, mentoring or to at least be a member of some useful forums as I mentioned in my last post.
You will also to need your own product and some good contacts. You can use other peoples products initially but it won’t work as well or as fast.
The hardest part is to only collect the parts that your really need and throw away the rest.
You must have a solid plan just like when you are building a house, so that you know exactly what you need and what to do. Otherwise you will end up with the leaning tower of pisa with crumbling foundations.
You must focus on this plan and not start building other sites before you have one working.
It takes time – Rome wasn’t build in a day, but if you keep pushing away at one plan you will get there.
But be prepared – it may well take a couple of years. Most people aren’t going to tell you that but realistically it does take time to gather the knowledge you need and to train yourself to put it to good use.
If you are just starting out this probably isnt what you want to hear, but everyone finds this out in the end anyway so you are better off knowing now.
Focus – don’t keep checking your email, autoresponder, or paypal accounts.
I’ve been doing that today
it just shows that finding out what to do is much easier than actually doing it. It’s just that I keep getting ‘Congratulations , You Just made a sale’ emails and until this week this didn’t happen.
You have to ignore all the latest products on how to make $1000 per day without doing any work and stick to one thing. If you don’t you will never even make $1 per day.
Following a big boost in my IM business early this week I spent Thursday working on my IM business and left the staff to run our Printing & Stationery and Mail Order businesses. It was sunny so I had a break in the garden. It’s not quite warm enough in our summerhouse, but later in the year I may sit in there with my laptop and work, or maybe even go away somewhere for a week in the summer.
Can you imagine what it would be like to get this kind of freedom?
That’s the target I’m working towards, but for now it focus, focus, focus…

Great post Keith…and, right on target!
Funny that you mentioned “quit checking emails”…that revelation came to me earlier this week…emails can and will eat up your valuable time if you allow it.
Focus is the key word here…focusing on whatever project you’re working on presently.
I love your honesty in regards to telling people the “truth” in this business…it doesn’t happen over night. It takes investment, hard work and the will and patience to succeed.
Congrats that you are now seeing the “fruits” of your labor.
You deserve it!

Hi Keith you are so right about focus, I still have to train myself not to break my concentration ebery time the e-mail sound goes off. I have already started to unsubscribe to those that are just sell and no give. you are correct about it taking time to happen and yes we never get told that.
Spot on
Rob
Hi Keith
This is a great post. Last Tuesday I met an friend and entrepreneur to discuss focusing in my business. I got a little bit overwhelmed by all the ideas, opportunities and tasks I’ve been doing. However, I had a the feeling of getting nowhere.
Everything is pointing to the need of re-planing and focusing in what I want to do.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts

While you give some good advice, you don’t seem to have understood the quote. When Brinkley spoke of “throwing bricks” he was talking about people making negative comments and the like. “Throwing bricks”, like “throwing rocks”, is a metaphore for people trying to hurt you (usually in response to a perceived wrong).
What you are addressing is more like “people selling you gold bricks” – an entirely different matter.

Hi Keith
I read your article and found it very informative and to the point and this prompt me to contact you.
I have a site which I built myself. I want to go to the next level with the whole Banner/JV/internet marketing business. What advice can you give me? I have joined some forums but I am still stuck because of information overload. Help!
I must admit I am terrible for checking stats, emails, commissions etc it becomes addictive!
I am trying to make a conscious effort to notice when and why I go off track!
Now I am spotting these “danger” signals and stopping them in their tracks which means I get more done in a day.
Good post Keith, Sally
Thanks to everyone gain for your comments.
This is something I am still working on, but writing about it may help.
I suppose admitting a problem is the first step towards solving it.
Some days I do well, and others I don’t.
Planning tomorrow today is something I am still not always getting right. I still have some roadblocks to overcome.
Hi there Keith!
First time I have stopped by your blog and this title caught my attention very quickly!
Just want to say that you have provided spot on information about concentrating on one thing and not get distracted by all the other great products than can supposedly help you.
Great info and thanks for sharing.

Hi Keith,
Very interesting analogy with the bricks. Some of them may not be good to use.
Focus is the hardest thing these days and I think that everybody is struggling with it.
You seem to be doing very well overall.
I always learn a lot when I visit your blog.
