Alex Jeffreys Coaching Week 2 – Why You Should Be Top For Your Name.
This post isn’t completely connected with Alex Jeffreys Coaching but arose out of the forum when I posted about which niche I should be in:
“Programming was an option but I think I am going to discard that one.
I started out a couple of years ago with eBay because I had a lot of feedback (28,000 then) and could use that for credibility. eBay has only been my third biggest income source though.
Second place is Amazon where I have less feedback (about 11,000 – much lower proportion of buyers don’t leave feedback as it doesnt have the same relevance to them). I have made some notes about selling on Amazon and it is a possibility. I have some tips I have never seen anywhere.
Top place by a long way for overall profit is SEO on Google producting sales from my websites. Although the peak of this was a few years ago and I am only just getting back into it. I have 4 years of Google analytics stats that I could use for ‘proof’and do a free basic SEO eBook and upsell videos or a monthly membership site. SEO takes time so people would stay members for longer.”
START YOUR SEO HERE!
One simple way to start is to get first place on Google for your name. Obviously this will be easier if your name is fairly unusual like mine, and very tough if your name is John Smith.
Most of my colleagues are top for their own names though with their blogs.
These are some of the reasons why a blog is likely to be top:
1) When you comment on other peoples blogs and you fill in the standard form
with your name and blog URL your own name will in the anchor text (text in the link) linking back to your blog.
2) Your name will be in the posts on your blog, and in some post titles which will also put it in internal links on your blog.
3) Your name should be the domain of your blog eg KeithPurkiss.com
WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE TOP?
1) As I already said it is usually an easy place to start.
2) As you become better known and your ebooks spread around people may search for you name to find out more about you – being top on Google makes it easy to find you.
3) If you start with your blog you can discover how to make it top and then repeat for harder sites.
That’s it for this post so bye for now,

Good points, Keith. I learned some time ago how important commenting on blogs can be even more so if the blog has removed the “no follow” tag, which is still something I’m working on understanding fully.
I have massive notes from this short post as each point brought ideas to mind to explore.
I post comments on blogs a lot but am using my forum sales page as my website. Perhaps this is not the best thing for getting links. However, I certainly learn a lot which can never be a bad thing.
Hi Keith,
David here, another student of Alex Jeffreys.
This is a great post and rings especially true for me because “David Walker” is a reasonably competitive (or rather “common”!) name.
Rob – blog comments may be “no follow” but they are still “counted” by Google. They just do not pass on any value to contribute to your PageRank (PR) value.
I hope this makes sense?
Anyway Keith, I look forward to more from you and please keep in touch.
David
Great post Keith!
I think I am going to struggle with a name like Paul Wilson. There are millions of me!!!
I will try my hardest though!
Great job,
Paul
This is a great post. It’s a great idea to focus on SEOing your name first. It’s obviously the easiest, seeing as we all use our names on our blogs and in other blog’s comments. I love learning about SEO. Another factor that lends to the longevity of an SEO membership site is that fact that SEO is constantly changing. New search engines pop up (Bing is getting more and more popular). The big guys constantly change their rules. (Google SEO is totally different now than it was 5 years ago). Keeping up with the changing atmosphere in search engines can really create a long and active membership site.
Very interesting post, Keith. When I did a search for my name (should be easy to get to the top, right)…my past in the film music industry caught up with me. – Pretty much the entire front page is about me, but not in a capacity that I’m currently utilizing. That’s food for thought… because maybe I should leverage these records somehow.
Cheers
Thomas
Great idea Keith, Ill be giving it a go in spite of the numerous other Tom Harvey’s out there!! Just need to get my blog sorted now….
